Meryem Bekmez EXTRAORDINARY in Istanbul. 5 national record in one race!!!!!

Istanbul (TUR) – “Record machine”, as the Turkish Athletics Federation defined she. Meryem Bekmez (seventeen) last saturday triumphed in the indoor racewalk 5000m, after realizing a true feat. The racewalker coached by Çetin Aslan in one shot has achieved 5 national records:

  • Turkish record U20 in the transition to 2000m: 8’35”50
  • Turkish record U20 and Over20 (Senior) in the transition to 3000m: 13’05”40
  • Turkish record U20 and Over20 (Senior) on 5000m: 21’54”20

Bekmez had already collected 16 records in the 2016 season, before second place at the IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi, the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Grosseto, and the other resulting 13 records for the 2017 season. The young turkish girl is already on the way to Tokyo 2020.

In the men’s field, a very fought 5000m race and a return to the success of Salih Korkmaz in 20’00”50, which prevails over Mert Atli in 20’07”50, and Serkan Doğan in 20’18”24. In the surreal atmosphere of the stupendous Istanbul Athletics Hall, the 2000m and 3000m races dedicated to the youth categories were also held.
